All are welcome to join us for worship Sundays at 11:00 AM. The service will be multi-platform, both in-person and streamed onto Zoom. A recording will be available on the church’s YouTube channel later Sunday afternoon.
“Joseph Priestley, Unitarian and Radical Immigrant” with Jim Caldiero
Dr. Joseph Priestley, the discoverer of oxygen, was a Unitarian minister who immigrated to the U.S. with the help of Benjamin Franklin after his home, church and lab were destroyed by a mob in England because of his pro-American and French Revolution advocacy and his Unitarian religious views. Once here, he continued his religious and political discourse joining Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, thus running afoul of the Federalists and the Alien and Sedition Acts. He became a target of venomous political attacks after recommending that others should immigrate to America.
About Jim Caldiero: Born in New York City, Jim did undergraduate and graduate studies in public administration at the City University of New York and NYU. After working for Mayor John Lindsay, he joined the Social Security Administration where he served on the senior staff, directing the agency’s software testing activities. He has been active in UU social justice serving as the National Co-Chair of the UU Service Committee’s Volunteer Network. He currently serves as the lead advocate for immigration reform with the UU Legislative Ministry of Maryland. Married to his wonderful wife, Dorothy, they reside in Ellicott City.
