Social Responsibility

Social Responsibility at Channing:  Social Justice and Opportunity

At Channing Memorial Church, we believe that all have a responsibility to serve the community around us. We actively promote social responsibility in many ways. We recognize that we are all connected, one to another, within our congregation and throughout the world, and that no individual is worth less as a human being because he does not have a job or a home.

 We move outward from the congregation to serve the greater community, inspired by the Unitarian Universalist principle of justice, equity and compassion in human relations.    We work to support multicultural community through the principles embodied in our 8th Principle Resolution.  Members of Channing Memorial Church give time and money in a variety of ways to support persons in need in the Howard and Baltimore County communities.

Channing Social Justice Team

The Channing Social Justice Team offers our members, friends, youth and children many opportunities to make “good trouble,” to work for justice, to make a difference in the world, and to live our values and our UU Principles.  Check out this website for much more information on the church’s social justice activities.

Special Collections Procedure

Nominations may come from any member or friend of the congregation or the minister.

Organizations whose mission supports our UU values take precedence. An organization may be local, national or international.

Nominations may be made at any time. The Special Collections Team will keep a running prioritized list of proposed collection recipients and will let nominators (sponsors) know if the nominee has been selected.

If the nominee is selected, the nominator (sponsor) must notify the organization, and

  • provide a brief message about the organization that can be distributed via email and newsletter to the congregation.
  • may arrange for the organization to have someone speak to the congregation during the worship service for no longer than three minutes,
  • or the sponsor may speak during the worship service for no longer than three minutes.
  • may have the organization bring brochures or other printed matter.
  • remain after the service to answer questions, participate in a discussion.

Adopt a Drain Project

Channing has adopted, and sponsored financially, two drains near the church office on Park Avenue with the Howard County EcoWorks Adopt a Drain project. Keeping these drains clear helps to prevent flooding in Old Ellicott City after heavy rainstorms.  More information about this project may be found at: https://www.howardecoworks.org/adopt-a-drain

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

Channing offers financial support for NAMI – Howard County. Speakers from NAMI have come to broaden our awareness, educate us and discuss with us the challenges of mental health issues.
