We recognize that we are all connected, one to another, within our congregation and throughout the world, and that no individual is worth less as a human being because he does not have a job or a home. We serve the greater community, inspired by the Unitarian Universalist principle of justice, equity and compassion in human relations. Members of Channing Memorial Church give time and money in a variety of ways to support persons in need in the Howard and Baltimore County communities.
Helping At Westside Shelter
Channing Memorial Church regularly provides meals, pantry items, and personal care items for residents at the Westside Shelter, a men’s homeless shelter operated by the Community Assistance Network of Baltimore County. We also visit the shelter to carol at the holidays, provide holiday cookies, or stuff chocolate in Valentine's Day cards made by children in our Religious Education classes.
In addition, the congregation recognizes that the human spirit must also be fed. We have also offered a book group for Westside residents. We have participated in fascinating discussions of both modern and classic literature.
Children's Social Justice Ministry
As an example of an emergency to which we responded quickly, in November 2013 the congregation collected “care” kits to send to the Philippines after the devastating typhoon Haiyan. Our “Loving Hearts, Helping Hands” children's ministry initiated this effort, and then packed in individual packages the supplies donated by the congregation.
